Sex Ed: Busting Harmful Myths About Bisexuality.
Celebrating Bi Visibility Day with love and acceptance for all.
As we celebrate Bi Visibility Day, it's important to address the harmful myths that still plague the bisexual community. These myths perpetuate the erasure and marginalisation of bisexual individuals, making it difficult for them to find acceptance and support. As someone who has experienced this firsthand, having been in relationships with people of different genders, I feel it's important to debunk these myths and promote a better understanding of bisexuality. So today, let's bust some of the most common myths surrounding bisexuality and promote greater visibility and acceptance for this vibrant and diverse community!
Myth #1: Bisexuality is just a phase.
This myth is incredibly invalidating and harmful. Bisexuality is a legitimate sexual orientation that doesn't simply disappear after a certain amount of time. While some people may go through phases of questioning their sexuality, it doesn't mean that bisexuality is any less real.
Myth #2: Bisexual people are confused.
This myth is rooted in the harmful idea that bisexuality is a "middle ground" between being straight and being gay, but that's simply not true. Bisexual people aren't confused about their sexuality; they're attracted to both men and women (or more than two genders), and that's perfectly valid.
Myth #3: Bisexual people are promiscuous.
This myth is damaging because it assumes that bisexuality is inherently tied to sexual behaviour, but like any other sexual orientation, bisexuality is about attraction, not behaviour. Bisexual people can be just as monogamous or polyamorous as anyone else, and it's not fair to stereotype them as being more sexually active.
Myth #4: Bisexual people are more likely to cheat.
This stereotype is completely unfounded and harmful. Bisexual people are just as capable of being faithful and committed as anyone else. Cheating is a behaviour that has nothing to do with sexual orientation.
Myth #5: Bisexual people are just looking for attention.
This myth is based on the idea that bisexuality is a choice or a lifestyle, rather than a legitimate identity. However, bisexuality is a real and valid sexual orientation, and people who identify as bisexual aren't doing it for attention. They're simply expressing who they are.
It's important to bust these myths about bisexuality, as they can lead to harmful attitudes and discrimination towards bisexual individuals. If you have held any of these beliefs in the past, it's never too late to educate yourself and become a better ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
Remember, love is love, no matter who you're attracted to.
